Since it's impossible to make images of the Milky Way as a whole, we have to content ourselves with illustrations of our own galaxy (or check our image of the galaxy NGC 6744, a galaxy that is considered to be a twin of the Milky Way). But these illustrations are quite accurate and they will give you a very good impression of how the Milky Way would appear if it were photographed from another nearby galaxy.
